When Simplicity Becomes a Security Feature

At ADLM 2026, one conversation challenged an assumption we had always made about laboratory equipment. Like many manufacturers, we have often viewed greater connectivity, more onboard functions, and smarter software as natural directions for product development. As laboratories continue moving toward digital pathology and automation, it seems reasonable to assume that more intelligent devices are always the better solution.

However, several discussions with distributors revealed a different perspective. One experienced distributor explained that some of their customers, particularly organizations with very strict security requirements, actually prefer a printer that behaves like a traditional office printer. Their expectation is simple: receive the print job, print it accurately, and store no patient information once the task is complete.
The reasoning behind this preference is not a rejection of technology but a different approach to managing risk. Every device capable of storing patient information becomes another endpoint that must be protected from unauthorized access. Although modern laboratory equipment incorporates extensive cybersecurity measures, some organizations choose to reduce risk by minimizing the amount of sensitive information stored on individual devices. For laboratories working with highly confidential information, reducing data retention can be just as important as strengthening cybersecurity itself.

This conversation reminded us that laboratory workflows are becoming increasingly diverse. While many pathology laboratories continue to invest in intelligent workflow integration, barcode traceability, and centralized data management, others place a higher priority on simplicity and data privacy. The best solution depends not only on the technology available, but also on the environment in which it will be used.
At Zenith Biomedical, these conversations influence how we think about product development. Rather than assuming every customer needs the same level of intelligence, we believe laboratories should have the flexibility to choose the solution that best fits their workflow and security requirements. That is one of the reasons we are developing a simplified version of our pathology printer that focuses on reliable printing without unnecessary onboard functions or local data storage, while continuing to offer fully featured models for laboratories that require more advanced workflow integration.

As a manufacturer, we believe it is our responsibility to understand the different needs of every laboratory and develop solutions that reflect those needs rather than expecting every customer to adapt to a single product philosophy. Whether the priority is intelligent workflow integration or maximum data privacy, our goal remains the same: to make everyday work easier for pathologists and laboratory professionals while helping laboratories improve productivity through solutions that truly fit their environment.
ADLM 2026 reminded us that innovation is not always about adding more features. Sometimes, the most valuable innovation is giving laboratories the freedom to choose exactly the level of functionality they need
